SURE FIRE WAY TO MASTER SPELLING AND PHONICS SKILLS USING THE SCIENCE OF READING

Orton-Gillingham is an approach widely used in teaching reading and spelling to students, particularly those with dyslexia. However, it is becoming more common to use the OG method within the general education classroom at a Tier 1 level. One effective tool within this approach is the use of hands-on activities. I created the SOR sorts to help students practice and reinforce the spelling and phonics patterns they have learned in small-group instruction.

WHY CHOOSE SOR SORTS?

SOR Sorts provide students with a tangible way to engage with the material. By physically moving words into the correct area working on reading, spelling, and categorizing. Students can internalize and apply their knowledge more concretely. This kinesthetic approach can be especially beneficial for elementary-aged students who are still developing their literacy skills. Students will be challenged when completing these skills independently and they provide a quick and easy progress monitoring tool to check for student understanding.

One amazing advantage to SOR Sorts is their ability to help students generalize their learning. These sorts require students to apply phonics rules and spelling patterns in various contexts. Students are allowed to strengthen their understanding and transfer these skills to their reading and writing throughout the grade-level curriculum.

Supporting Small Group Instruction

SOR Sorts are particularly effective in small group settings. While students who grasp the concepts quickly can work independently on the worksheets, teachers can use this time to provide additional support and reteach material to struggling students while reteaching or completing the sorts with guidance. Each spelling pattern is differentiated into three levels.

Level 1 Students will cut and paste using their prior knowledge of the phonics pattern.

Level 2: Students will fill in the missing phonics pattern before they cut and paste onto the worksheet.

Level 3: Students are allowed to generate their own words that display the spelling patterns taught explicitly during the lesson.

SOR Sorts give students a fun way to reinforce spelling and phonics patterns. By incorporating these Sorts into small group instruction or independent work, teachers can provide students with a supportive environment to practice, generalize, and strengthen their literacy skills.
